League Vision
The purpose of the Calgary Junior Curling Super League is for the development and advancement of Junior curling in the Calgary region. We envision the Junior Super League as an integral step in the development of youth curling in the Calgary area by providing a bridge gap between the Sunday CYCA program and evening adult leagues.
Junior curlers' skills will be enhanced by:
Playing against a peer group of competitive teams striving to be provincial
champions
Playing along side the adult Calgary Premiere Super League (CPSL) teams
Freeing up Junior teams Sunday schedule to facilitate playing weekend bonspiels
National Training Centre involvement on-ice and in pre or post game activities
Flexible league rules that facilitate coaching and team development
The possibility of occasional games against adult Super League teams
The possibility of an automatic entrance to the Premiere Super League for the top
team advancing out of the Junior Super League once they reach that point due to
age or advanced ability.
League Format
We are initially looking for 6 to 10 Junior teams to play Tuesday evening games at the Calgary Winter Club in association with the Calgary Premiere Super League. The season will begin as early as possible which would likely be late September, thus providing as much curling as possible before playdowns. Games will be split between an early and late draw with exact starting times and number of ends to be finalized in upcoming meetings to ensure the best interest of the youth curlers are considered. Initial thoughts are 5: 45 pm for the first draw and 8:00 pm for the second draw, allowing players to get to the early games on time and not get home too late from the late draw.
General rules of play will include:
CCA Free Guard Zone
Games consisting of 8 ends
Two official time outs per team (no 4th end break)
Coaches allowed at ice level during games to monitor team communication, discuss
game situations, ice conditions etc. with the following caveats;
- They do not interfere with the progress of the game
- They stand inconspicuously off ice at the side or back of the sheet
- They refrain from making strategy or ice call decisions for the team unless
during their team's time out
There will be no cash prizes for each win as there are with the adult league
Team Acceptance Criteria
Qualification for joining the league will be based on a variety of criteria which will be reviewed by the league executive. There will not be a qualifying tournament as used by the Premiere Super League at this time, but rather a team history. The underlying principal will be to garner teams that are competitive enough to help further the league in the development of potential provincial champions in the Juvenile and Junior ranks.
Criteria factors will include:
Historic participation in past playdowns (Bantam, Juvenile, and Junior)
Success rate in playdowns (eg. Advancement to Southerns, Provincials, etc.)
Participation in advanced curling clinics (NTC, Alberta Rocks, CYCA, etc.)
Competitiveness in bonspiels and playdowns
Age of team players (expected range 16-19 yrs old)
Potential to represent SACA at Provincials in Juvenile or Junior classes
Teams returning for the following season will automatically be eligible unless there are unusually circumstances effecting their competitiveness that would necessitate them being evaluated against new applicants meeting the above criteria.
League Cost
League fee for each team is $800, and is based on the new Calgary Winter Club ice rental costs of $66/sheet plus tax, Calgary Premiere Super League web site fees, and a 20 game schedule. Teams will be notified of their acceptance before mid September and will be required to pay league fees at that time.
